A theory for gravity wave generation from jets, fronts and convection

A nonorographic gravity wave parameterization is derived in two steps: 1) the "slaved" ageostrophic flow is approximated from quasi-geostrophic theory and 2) those faster-than-f frequencies are associated with gravity wave "radiation". This receipt is applied to decellerating jets, frontogenesis and moist convection and results in formulae without tuning parameters. The predictions of gravity wave energy are validated with six Weather Research and Forecast model simulations revealing an explained variance of 93 %.
