Some of the discrepancies between WACCM simulations of the middle atmosphere and observations can be attributed to insufficient or incorrect forcing from the WACCM parameterized gravity waves. This presentation will discuss how we have tried to reduce specific discrepancies without contradicting gravity wave theory and observations. Discrepancies that have been the focus of recent effort are the cold lower stratosphere in winter at the South Pole, the warm tropical mesopause, the QBO and SAO in the tropical middle atmosphere, and the low amplitudes of migrating tides.
